I'm a newbie -- or a wannabe at least! But having a problem getting started.

All I want to do is access IRCHighway. On Wikipedia I see that Ircle is a long-established way to go with my Mac (system 10.4.11) and a couple of weeks ago I send Ircle the bucks to join.

I try to connect to the Server <irchighway.net>. Go to Ircle's "Connection preferences," click on Server, and go thorough a very long list but there's no sign of IRCHighway. Sounds crazy, but it seems that unless a server is on Ircle's list, you can't access it. I write them for help a bunch of times but no answer.

Please IRCHighway, how do I go forward?

*Googles*

Hmmmm, I'd try following this page and see if it helps you: http://www.ircle.com/reference/quickstart.shtml

If not that, you can use our webchat at http://webchat.irchighway.net/

Telling me to go Google isn't any sort of useful answer

He didn't tell you to Google - he told you the result of HIS Google...

Let me quote something from the link he gave you:

Quote:
If you want to select a different server from you serverlist or add a new server, click on the 'server'-button. You will get a new window with the serverlist where you can choose a server. If you dont select a server, Ircle will use the default server for that particular connection as shown in your connections window.

Most of us doesn't really have any MAC knowledge, and there really isn't any call for that tone of voice. We're just trying to help you...

Thank you, NiaRB, for replying to my bad-tempered comment (sorry about that) and taking the matter a little further -- could be, your Google quote is the answer.

My "tone of voice" comes from frustration -- one sends Ircle/Onno Tijdgat the euros, they say thanks, then ignore a small question. That was a new software experience.

Eventually I'll get IRC going -- probably I'm missing something or making a dumb mistake. But given that what I want to do is access IRCHighWay, I thought a Mac user might set me right on this forum.

And, Mac or no, perhaps you have done that . . . .

Hmm, obviously it's been a couple months, but I know there aren't too many mac IRC users out there so I'll go ahead and try to help.

I started out with IRCle, but switched pretty quickly. If I recall correctly there should be an option to type in the server yourself; which is irc.irchighway.net. However, I would recommend getting Colloquy instead. It's free, and it's interface feels more Mac-like. Also, it's a ton easier to set up than IRCle. As that's what I use now, I can't help you much more with IRCle. It's been too long for me to remember much about it.

http://colloquy.info/

There's also the Firefox add-on if you use that browser that should be the same on both Mac and Windows.

Thanks for that, much appreciated -- I suspect you're absolutely right and Colloquy looks good. Though STILL not connected, I'm planning to do just as you say. Unfortunately IRC is still in my Kinda Hard basket and waiting on a little spare time. (Ircle is such a con).

Does the Firefox add-on simplify things any? Ordinarily I use Safari.

I'm not sure I don't have experience with the firefox add-on. However, now that you're using Colloquy I can actually help.

I'll get you connected first before going into any of the advanced preferences. That way if you have any more questions you can join the #help channel (if that's allowed, some mod tell me if it's not) and I can talk to you through it.

Creating a new connection:
Edit:Image smaller. Linked to larger version.

First you need to click on the yellow lightning bolt that says new. It should pop up a window that looks like mine, except that the detail won't be shown; click the arrow by detail to show everything. It will most likely already fill in a few of the fields using your computers information, but depending on what you're doing I would just make it all blank.

At the top is the nickname box. This is pretty important. It'll be the alias you're known by on irchighway. Some nicknames are registered(password protected), so you won't be able to use them. Choose anything that fits your fancy, and once you're connected you can deal with registering your nick, or finding another if the one you picked is taken.

After that you'll notice the server protocol. Just start typing in irc.irchighway.net, and it should auto-complete it. If not, just type the whole thing in. If you're going to be using irchighway as your main connection, make sure to check the box by remember this connection so you don't have to go through this every time you connect.

After that go down to where it says chat server port. It should already be 6667, which will work with irchighway. However, if you can't connect (after the next steps I show you) you can go back and change it. Irchighway will work ports 6660 - 6669 and 9999 with ssl checked(secure protocol, that's what I use). If you can't get any of these ports to work, they might be blocked, and I can't help you there. I'm actually having the same issue in my dorm room, and still working on getting around that.

The username is pretty useless, but you still need to put something in there. Can be the same as your nickname, doesn't matter.

There isn't a server password for Irchighway. So just leave that blank.

I'd recommend leaving the real name blank as well, or putting something witty in there. Anyone can use a command to see it, so it's not secure to put your real name in there.

Edit: My IRC lingo was apparently on vacation when I wrote this. Rooms are referred to as channels in IRC. Thanks Tralin. Edited for clarity.

Now for the channels. Channels are the IRC equivalent to chatrooms. They always begin with # followed by the name of the channel. If you're in chat you can type out the command /join #[channel name] to join that room. However, here you can set up Colloquy to automatically join channels that you frequent. Just hit the plus sign, type out # and then the channel name. After that every time you connect it will join that channel.

And that's it. It should work. If you're new to IRC in general join #help and they should be able to walk you through the ropes. I'll be in there for a bit too if you need to contact me. My nick is the same as it is on here: redfuzzy.

P.S. Sorry for the week it took to get back. Forgot to check this thread again until tonight.

In response to Fuzzy:

There shouldn't be a problem with joining #help and asking questions, #help is there for IRC stuff, though if it ever is a problem then we'll let the user asking know on the occurrence.

Also, just so that Gao or other users who may read this don't get confused, "rooms" or "chatrooms" on IRC are technically called "channels", and while calling it a room is quite acceptable, you may see it referred to as a channel instead.

Edit:

Fuzzy, do you think that you could make a copy of that screenshot, size it down and use the smaller one in the post please, and make a link to the larger version? It'll just help some of our users with smaller monitors.

Will do, I was thinking of resizing it, but it wasn't readable when I did; didn't think of linking it to a larger image. /facepalm

I don't know where my head was when I wrote rooms, sorry. I'll edit it so it's more clear.

Edit: Done. Image smaller with link to the larger version. Channels are no longer called rooms.

Also @SaSH
I'd never heard of LimeChat before. Colloquy works with growl too btw. The only issue I have is that it doesn't work with SSH tunnels apparently (whatever that means.... just know that's what I tried before), so I don't know how to use a proxy with it.

Lol, thanks Fuzzy.

And actually "rooms" is the word that the program uses as according to your screenshot, so I figured that you're just used to it from there.

Many thanks, redfuzzy, the screen shots were great, also the notes thereon -- verry useful indeed. With your excellent help, I'm all connected.

No big deal following your instructions, which leaves me wondering how come Ircle has the reputation for being the way to go with a Mac? I really can't make any sense of their site (all examples given in System 9!!) No wonder they don't answer any questions!

What they do do well is extract payment and give the impression that using IRC requires an entrance fee. Is there any truth to this, or, now that I'm connected to IRCHighway via Colloquy, am I on my way?

IRC is 100% free. You might have to pay for the software you use though.
