Hello. Recently one of my site admins signed us up for a Ventrilo server, and we were able to add a small Javascript Status Monitor to our websites front page.
This helps members see who's in Ventrilo, if anyone is, in realtime, before they fire up their Ventrilo software.
Is this something that is possible with my IRC channel, either with Javascript or php, and if so, where can I find the script?
I'd like to get more of my site members to actively participate in the IRC chats that we have, and feel they might be more inclined to join, if they're faced with this type of automatic monitor. |

Hey there Storm!
I took a quick look around Google, and it doesn't look promising.
What I did find appears to be an addon for mIRC which connects to a Vent server to return information about the people connected, but it's not a channel bot so the information wouldn't be available through the channel. The link I found is: http://www.mircscripts.org/comments.php?cid=3709
Remember too that there are a number of easy to use methods to connect to IRC, seeing as many people may avoid coming here altogether because of how complicated it looks to use. The easiest is to use our webchat (http://webchat.irchighway.net). After that, I'd suggest using a client of some sort. My personal favourite for ease and attractive look was HydraIRC, though I now use mIRC. Just make sure you provide the setup steps for your users.
I'd suggest checking back here occasionally though, another Oper may be able to find something for you. |

Thanks Tralin.
Ya Google was being a pain for me too. (it needs to MAKE things for you if it can't FIND them, lol)
I myself use mIRC and Trillian to connect to the IRC channels, and my website even has a java plugin, so members can click that and join the channel easily.
Was just hoping to find something to help drive people to the IRC Channel. At onetime my site boasted 30-40 people in the IRC every night and weekend (at once). Now we're lucky to see 3-4. While much of this decline is due to declining membership, I know some of it is because people have more choices now on how to interact with other members and friends. (well, that, and the 5 confirmed women on the site are now married/engaged, so the single male population trying to garner their attention in the IRC is non-existant)
I'll keep looking though.
Hmm... maybe a bot that runs in IRC, and reports to the website via some sort of interface... *fires up google* (did find some reference to "who's chatting now" features on some forum IRC channels.. trying to track down the code now) |
